Chuck with wagon wheel

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Chuck Norcutt
Title: Chuck with wagon wheel
Gear used: OM-2sp + 85/2 on Bogen/Manfrotto 3401 w/ 308RC ball head
Diaphragm: F5.6
Shutter speed: auto
Film used: Fujicolor Super HQ 200
Technical information: I used my favorite people lens for the first time ever on myself. I found this a very tough exerecise to compose; having to guess where I'm going to be in the image. Got it totally wrong on many frames.
Subject information: A typically cloudy New England day. This was taken under one of the ancient apple trees in my back yard. I thought the equally ancient wagon wheel would add a bit of novelty to an otherwise ordinary mug shot. There's probably an interesting story behind this wheel but I have no idea what it is.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (ogreve@web-wizards.com) The story behind the wheel would indeed be interesting to find out; could it have been part of a mail carriage that was ambushed by Billy the Kid? :)
Whatever the story, it certainly acts as a nice prop to complete the composition.

Comment left by: B.B. Bean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Nice shot - well exposed, well focused, and well composed.

Comment left by: Ron Spolarich (caesar2@mediaone.net) Natural light images are easy on the eyes. I had to have my daughter prefocus the camera and compose the image and even then it was trial and error. You defintely got the composition right! Seems to have a slight yellow cast Chuck in the flesh tones. Is this from the film or the scanner?

Comment left by: Chuck Norcutt (norcutt@attglobal.net) To Ron. You're right, I'm not naturally that yellow. The yellowish cast is not visible in the print so must be in the scanning and/or our monitors.

Comment left by: Siddiq (siddim01@student.ucr.edu) Yep, seems yellowish to me as well (monitor gamma corrected, at 5000K).

Comment left by: Joel Wilcox (jowilcox@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu) I had wanted to use the 85/2 myself (my fav portrait lens), but chickened out (as I figured I'd never get the focus right). You did well!

Comment left by: Chuck Norcutt (chucknorcutt@attbi.com) Olafo graciously agreed to replace my original "jaundiced" submission with one having more natural color. Now that I have my own digital processing capabilities I fixed the scan originally done for me by a friend. Thanks, Olafo.
