Big Brother is Watching You

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Paul Reynolds
Title: Big Brother is Watching You
Gear used: Either OM1 or OM4, see if you can tell which.
Film used: Ilford HP5, ASA 400
Technical information: Not having the luxury of a fish eye lens, this seemed the next best thing. The shot was taken in early morning, cold but bright.
Subject information: Taken a few weeks ago near to the town centre (or center if you must) of Wolverhampton, UK. The area is a particularly grotty one, built as it was in the late sixties, if I recall correctly, as an underpass (one of many) to the town’s infamous ring road. I’d noticed these mirrors around, intended to spot potential muggers around corners, and had been wondering how to make use of one of them. Unfortunately the cleanliness of the mirror leaves something to be desired; call it urban realism.

I tried to do something similar for my TOPE self portrait, but the only mirror I tried it with was a square one, and a very dirty one indeed. I ditched those pictures and tried something else.
Also, the picture reminds me of one I took in Paris, called Sun and steel.

Comment left by: Ian Nichols (i.a.nichols@bris.ac.uk) Well done, you've managed to make Wolverhampton seem like an alien (in the SF sense) landscape in a way that Dr Who never could. I think it was the OM-1, unless the OM-4 is really a -4Ti, because it seems to have a light coloured prism housing and OM-4s were all black.

Comment left by: Bill Staudenmaier (wstaude103@aol.com) Interesting shot; I've often thought about trying one of these myself. Reflective surfaces are always fun to play with, especially if the viewer isn't aware of what you have done to create the image. In this shot, however, I can't quite decide....do you still have the moustache and beard?
