Restored Classic

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's Name: Jon Mitchell
Title: Restored Classic
Gear Used: OM-10 & 50/1.8
Diaphragm / Shutter Speed: Unknown
Film Used: Kodakcolor Gold 400 ASA
Technical Information: This was the last roll put through my dying OM-10, mainly as a test to see just how dead it was. By luck, this was one of the few shots that came out exposed correctly. Most suffered from the common OM-10 problem of shutter staying open far too long. Many had a strong colour hue to them as well.
Composition: The car is a classic MG, at the MG Car Club weekend at Silverstone, 22nd to 24th June 2001. I am not an old classic, nor am I particularly in need of restoration just yet ! At the time of taking this shot, I was not on the Olympus list, and did not intend for it to be a "self-portrait" in any way. In fact, I don't think I had even noticed the reflection particularly when I took the shot. Still, some of the best shots happen by accident ... maybe I could have got the badge and statue a little more "level" though ?

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) O.k., o.k., you guys are getting a bit too creative in finding dodgy ways to qualify for the self portrait theme...;)

Regarding the question you pose at the end of your description: this shot might indeed have worked a bit better if the logo and statue would have been a bit more level, also, DOF could be a tad shallower, so the statue would stand out a bit better against the background (though it was always going to be tough in this picture, as there is not a lot of colour contrast between the statue and the hood of the car).

Still, it's a nice shot and I especially like the chrome on the front of the car a lot, that came out pretty well! Also, I have never seen an MG with that statue, it looks pretty cool!

Comment left by: Bill Barber (nsurit@aol.com) I might call this one "Three Classics". The first two are obvious - the car and the camera. The third is the guy who is behind the camera. He is smart enough to enjoy the first two. Welcome to the TOPE. I like this shot and if you were doing something other than trying to figure out how dead your camera was, you might have cropped closer or differently or worked with the DOF a bit. You didn't and you still ended up with something nice.
