Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Steve Goss
Title: Me.
Gear used: OM-2n + Vivitar 28-50/3.5 + Sunpak 433AF flash + a small Vivitar flash on a slave + tripod + self timer.
Diaphragm: Don't remember
Shutter speed: 1/60
Film used: Kodak Gold 100 ASA.
Technical information: The Sunpak flash was on the camera, and pointed to the ceiling. It's job was to trigger the slave. The slaved Vivitar was placed on a blade of the ceiling fan above the table, pointed down. It's an arrangement that only works some of the time.
Subject information: I don't do as much studying as I should. But this was an opportunity to be seen as I might want to be remembered, so... Besides, this shot just looks better than the runners up.
Runners up: The ones that didn't make it. So much for being anonymous.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (ogreve@web-wizards.com) What exactly is your motivation for choosing such a complicated flash set-up?
Did you deliberately want lighting from above to make the books stand out better?
Curious...

Comment left by: wiliam wagenaar (wiliam2@wish.net) I like this idea

Comment left by: Steve Goss (steveg3@flash.net) The flash setup didn't seem that complicated at the time... If I remember, I wanted kind of an "island" light on the table and the rest pretty dark. Also, I felt that just using the one flash on the camera would look pretty flat, even bouncing off the ceiling. Being farther from the wall might have helped

Comment left by: B.B. Bean (bbbean@beancotton.com) I liked the alternate shot with the 135 - the "owen" shot.

Comment left by: John A. Lind (jlind@netusa1.net) I also like the Owen 135 because some of the light reflected upward from the white papers on the desk. Your lighting method does have a more natural look to it indoors coming from above (where most indoor lighting is) versus from the camera itself. This is a method to continue to experiment with and perfect. It has a definite feeling of hard study under the glare of bright reading lights. Saw your "deep thought" one also. Good grab shot. :-)

Comment left by: Siddiq (siddim01@student.ucr.edu) Why didn't you chose "thinker"?! That's so awesome!

Comment left by: Gary Edwards (garyetx@home.com) Say, Steve, about those shots that didn't make it... This jumping off telephone poles, do you do that often? If so, would you name me in your will for the Zuikos?

Great looking kids!

Comment left by: Steve Goss (steveg3@flash.net) I didn't pick the shot with the Owen 135mm lens because the pages were so washed out. The 28mm one was the only one with any page detail left. Plus the wide angle effect on the books caught my eye.
The thinker was a pretty good shot, appeals to my offbeat sense of humor, but I didn't want it to be the only way people saw me.
I've done the telephone pole jump twice. I forgot to get the shots I wanted during the first one. Gary, you want my zuikos, eh? All two of them?

Comment left by: Peter Leyssens (leyssens@yahoo.com) Nice picture ! It reminds me of a portrait by Ansel Adams, except he was using a 4x5 camera shifted & tilted quite a lot, with a dramatic perspective effect to pronounce the books. Unfortunately there's no tilt'n'shift Zuiko.
