Grandpa's Mirror

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Jochen Schiffler
Title: Grandpa's Mirror
Gear used: OM-2S + 21/3.5
Diaphragm: f3.5 (perhaps)
Shutter speed: auto
Film used: Kodak EBX, ASA 100 slide film
Technical information: Shot in aperture priority mode, lens resting on wings of bedroom mirror.
The original slide has an awful reddish color cast due to artificial light (enhanced by 'ExtraColor' emulsion). I removed the color and improved sharpness as well as contrast in Photoshop. Adam Bolt - another TOPE contributor and great photographer - gave me the idea to reverse the image so that 'Olympus' reads the correct way. Why didn't I think of this myself? I even set focus on it.
Subject information: Taken in my grandpa's bedroom. As a kid (not too long ago) I was always fascinated by the 3-part wing mirror, played with the 2 outer wings and stuck my head between them while watching the amazing effects on the mirror image. During a visit in August 2002 (I'm 24 now) I just couldn't resist... :-)

The room has only a small window and weak artifical light sources. As you can imagine the space between the wings wasn't very well lit and the exposure time was about half a second or so . Fortunately I was able to rest the lens on the mirror's wings.

Excellent composition, nice repetitive patterns, and a nice prominent display of the Olympus logo :)

Comment left by: Roger (roger@worldtraveller.f9.co.uk) Funky stuff! I'm certain it works better as a black and white image than a colour one. And I think a silvernose is definitely better than a blacknose for this kind of shot.

Comment left by: Kam Cheung (kamm@netvigator.com) Nice shot. But I'm wondering why the Olympus logo does not appear as a reverse image.
