Spouting Horn

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Mark Marr-Lyon
Title: Spouting Horn
Gear used: OM-4T, Zuiko 21mm f/3.5
Diaphragm: Not recorded, but probably about f/8
Shutter speed: Probably around 1/250
Film used: Fuji Velvia 50
Technical information: Some of the rocks on the bottom of the picture were cropped.
Subject information: The Spouting Horn blowhole on the coast of Kaua'i, Hawai'i. According to the guidebook, there was a much larger blowhole just to the left of this one, which would shoot water 200 feet into the air. The sea spray was stunting the growth of a tiny fraction of a sugar cane plantation's crop, so in the 1920's they blew it up. Anyway, this wasn't the most spectacular plume we saw, but I like the similarites between the water spray and the clouds.

The geyser makes for a great subject. I like the blues in this picture a lot too.

Comment left by: Mickey Trageser (no e-mail specified) So many examples of water in one shot: ocean, foam, clouds and spout! They all seem to relate with one another. Very nice.

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Why the 21?

Comment left by: The photographer (no e-mail specified) The viewpoint was rather close to the spout, and to get anything else in the frame a wide angle was needed. As the 28 seemed a bit tight, with some sprays close to going out of the frame, my only other option was the 21. I also have some other shots from a different perspective taken with the 300, but I didn't like them as well.

Comment left by: Chris Barekr (imagopus@threeshoes.co.uk) lovely curve between rock, spout and sky with cirrus.

Comment left by: Buddy Walters (BWalters@attbi.com) Since I tried to shoot this very same spout last November, I appreciate your composition and choice of lens. Very well done! You faired much better than I.
