Spring Melt At A Road Cut

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Jim L'Hommedieu
Title: Spring Melt At A Road Cut
Technical info: Zuiko 100mm /2.8, Kodachrome 25, OM-4, tripod.
Shooting notes: My only tripod at the time was bouncy, so I set it low to the ground without using the center column. Spot metered the highlighted water using "hilight" button on OM-4 as a starting point. Bracketed exposures. Scanned on my $149 HP Scanjet 4470c (AKA 99880A), Made in China. Boy is that scanner a pain in the neck.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Nice shot.
BTW: What's the white stuff at the foot of the fall?

Comment left by: Mickey Trageser (no e-mail specified) Someone managed to find ice for the shoot! I like the backlit fall, would have liked to see some splash too, perhaps a highlight from flash?

Comment left by: Dave Dougherty (davdou@san.rr.com) Really nice composition. I love the K-25 pallette.

Comment left by: Johan Malmström (jmalmstrom@mac.com) A like the details in the this picture: how the the sun makes the water glow and the color of the snow/ice.

Comment left by: Lamadoo (jlamadoo@yahoo.com) Some folks object to the "blue" snow. Should I have corrected for the blue cast for the sky? What's the concensus?

Comment left by: Mickey Trageser (no e-mail specified) I don't think you should have corrected for the blue. It is balanced by the warm sun on the brown brush. If the surrounding area was also bluish, I'd consider it. I think it's fine. BTW, you're not supposed to reveal your identity yet!!

Comment left by: bbbean@beancotton.com (bbbean@beancotton.com) The blue doesn't bother me at all - ice looks like that when the skiy is blue. Nice shot - reminds me of the bluff lines I used to wander in Middle Tennessee.

Comment left by: :Doro (no e-mail specified) terrific location! The ice is glowing and the fall looks like a sunbeam to me...

Comment left by: Brian Swale (bj@caverock.net.nz) Great shot. The side/back light really makes it work.

Neat that you could find some ice from the impact-spray to add to the image. The colours are great too.

Blue ice is not a problem to me; that is how it is after all, when out of direct sun, and in any case there is some illuminated directly by the sun to give another hue.

Another aspect is that the shady parts of the image still have excellent illumination; you have worked around the ususal problem of K25 that there is insufficient latitude to cope with a wide exposure value range.
