Texture of Quiet

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Jay Maynard
Title: Texture of Quiet
Gear used: E-10
Shutter speed: 1/640
Diaphragm: f/4.5
Technical information: Nothing fancy here, just a bit of contrast tweaking in Photoshop.
Subject information: The stream that runs through Water Works Park in Des Moines, Iowa, at the bridge that crosses it. I was on my way in to a festival there, and was looking at the nice quiet stream. The surface texture caught my attention. Yes, that's the real color of the water there, with a lot of suspended silt.

Comment left by: Dan Mitchell (no e-mail specified) I like the way you've captured the almost 'oily' look that water sometimes has; seems to take particular conditions of flow, but when it does crop up it's very distinctive. The way the light's falling on it makes it look almost as if it's sand rather than water..

Comment left by: KenN (no e-mail specified) Uh Oh. Do we have another Iowaean lurking in our midst?

Comment left by: Jay Maynard (jmaynard@conmicro.cx) Nope, Ken, not by just under 10 miles. Fairmont, Minnesota is just over the border. Des Moines is about a 3-1/2 hour drive.
