St Aubin's Bay

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Alasdair Mackintosh
Title: St Aubin's Bay
Gear used: OM-4 + 80/2
Diaphragm: Not recorded, but fairly wide
Shutter speed: Not recorded
Film used: Fuji Superia 100
Technical information: Taken through the window of a (very slow moving) bus. A wide aperture helped to avoid focussing on any marks on the glass.
Subject information: St Aubin's Bay on Jersey. The tide was out, and the weak sunshine was reflected in the wet sand. I'm not really happy with this shot, and have tried cropping it in various ways, but eventually decided to present a fairly complete version of the negative. Feel free to crop it yourselves ;-)

P.S. My favourite water shot can be found here, but this was well outside the shooting period.

I like the fade-out effect seen in the distance, as well as the loneliness of the horseback rider.

This is as lonely a scene as the one painted by the song.

Interesting that people have thought that the shot looked "lonely". Given that it was taken from a bus that was stuck in a traffic jam on the road that runs past the bay, it didn't really seem that isolated to me ;-) Just goes to sho what framing can do...

The headland in the background is St Helier, the capital of Jersey. I think the chimney is from a power station.

Comment left by: Chuck Norcutt (chucknorcutt@attbi.com) I thought this one was great, much better than your favorite.

Comment left by: Joel Wilcox (no e-mail specified) I like this a lot. I think the problem I would have with it is that there is almost too much that it interesting going on in it that it can't all work together. The horse and rider, the line of bouys (or whatever they are at the right), the clouds, what appears to be a tall building at the upper left, the shore rocks in the foreground -- all these are interesting in themselves but almost too much put together. I think I would crop it down to just the horse and rider, a bit of sky, and just the shore at the foot of the rider. But I think of these as "good problems" rather than anything bad. It's a wonderful photo. Congratulations!

Comment left by: Winsor (no e-mail specified) Great shot. I would not crop it at all. Rather than isolation it gives me the feeling of an island of peace in an organized world suggested by the lighthouse or stack and buoys. Sort of a nostalgia for what is gone. The soft colors and banding of the water are really nice.

Comment left by: Chris Barker (imagopus@threeshoes.co.uk) This is an effective shot. I should not have thought of a crop until I read your comments... but that is a strength as well - that you can see different possibilities in the exisiting composition.

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) At the risk of adding a trivial comment (God forbid!) This shot makes me thing of Charlton Heston and Planet of the Apes.
