Tightrope Walker

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Mike Mitchell
Title: Tightrope Walker
Gear used: E-20N
Diaphragm: f2.4
Shutter speed: 1/400
Film used: None
Technical information: Macro Mode. Focal Length 124mm. Hand held.
Subject information: Spider web loaded with morning dew that I found early one morning after a very heavy fog the night before. Went out for a walk along the river about the time the sun started burning off the remaining mist. Took several shots before I noticed that some of the strands looked like stick men walking along the longer strands. Switched to macro mode and increased the shutter speed to offset the web blowing in the wind. Managed to get a few shots before the sun got up behind an oak tree. The background worked best for me in this one.

This is a tack-sharp web of waterdrops "floating" on a sea of bokeh.
Brilliant!

Comment left by: Mickey Trageser (no e-mail specified) The droplets seem to hover without a tether. I hardly see any web at all. An absolutely stunning shot. This is a wall hanger if ever there was one. Wow!

Comment left by: Eric Pederson (epederso@darkwing.uoregon.edu) Lovely. I'm impressed you got so much of the web in the shallow plane of focus too. I wish I could see a higher resolution / larger image so that the reflections in the drops would be clearer -- though I guess you are likely to be in them...

Comment left by: Dave Dougherty (davdou@san.rr.com) WOW! I am just acquiring an E-20. That shot is gorgeous!

Comment left by: benson (benson@research.haifa.ac.il) ethereal.

Comment left by: Johan Malmström (jmalmstrom@mac.com) Nice! This is, in my opinion, a perfect example of good color photography, the green background really makes this picture.

Comment left by: Roger Wesson (roger@worldtraveller.f9.co.uk) The green background is wonderful. I like the way the web itself is not visible, just the droplets on it. An excellent picture!

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) No way you took this with a digital - its much too nice. Very nice work.

Comment left by: Mark Marr-Lyon (no e-mail specified) I really like dewdrops on spider webs, and this is one of the best pictures of them that I've seen. Great bokeh, nice evenly spaced drops with a variety of drop sizes, and interesting patterns in the web. Beautiful!

Comment left by: :doro (no e-mail specified) wow! very interesting balance between tension and smoothness!

Comment left by: Buddy Walters (BWalters@attbi.com) Outstanding Composition - Leads my eye from the lower right to the upper left and off the print. Well Done!
