Wood Duck.

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Dave Shupe
Title: Wood Duck.
Gear used: OM-2n, 100mm F2.8.
Diaphragm: F8
Shutter speed: 1/125
Film used: Fujichrome Provia 100.
Technical information: Nothing fancy, just a daylight shot braced on a tree stump by the waters edge.
Subject information: I like the wavy look of the water surface, as well as the drops of water on the ducks head. IMHO I think the water is what makes this a nice shot.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) I definitely agree with your "subject information".
Also, the duck almost looks like a real one!

Comment left by: Mike Cormier (no e-mail specified) Uh... IS this a real duck? I know it is the species Wood Duck which is found in North America, but I'm unclear if this is a wooden decoy or a live example...?

Great shot though!

Comment left by: Ian Manners (somewere) Excellent colour saturation.

Comment left by: Bill Barber (nsurit@aol.com) Having lived most of my 57 years in Texas and having spent more than my fair share of time in the woods, I saw wood ducks in the wild for the first time this year and there three pairs that took up temporary resesdence at at local pond right by a big office building. These birds are spectacular and you did a great job of capturing its beauty. This guy looks like he (yes, it is the male of the species) has just come up from submerging himself in the water. Nicely done and I really like the deep color of the water and the droplet of water on his head and back. This is like water off a ducks back.

Comment left by: Joel Wilcox (no e-mail specified) The shot appears to be a little underexposed, but I think that is fortunate (in the event that you weren't shooting brackets and deliberately chose this exposure). I agree, the water makes the shot and the exposure seems perfect at giving both color and texture to the water. Very deep and rich. Nice job!

Comment left by: Chris Barker (imagopus@threeshoes.co.uk) Yes, the water is a lovely viscous thing with deep colour to provide a backdrop for the "secondary" subject of the duck.

Comment left by: The Photographer (no e-mail specified) Thanks for the nice comments. Just to clarify, Yes this is a real live Wood Duck, not a decoy or "wooden" duck.

L M N O ducks.
O S A R C M wings.
L I B M R ducks!

Would a wooden wood duck still be a wood duck, or would it be best to duck that question? Still, a nice shot.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Boy do I feel silly now about the "wood" vs. "wooden" confusion. :)

When I first looked at the picture, I thought it was a real duck, then I looked at the title (which I misread) and thought it was a wooden duck, now I know it was a real one after all! :)))

I wonder if it is one of the Oregon ducks...;)))

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Woodies are among my favorite ducks. Nice shot.
