Recycling the past

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Mike Butler
Title: Recycling the past
Gear used: OM-2s + Tokina AT-X 28-85mm f 3.5-4.5 @ ~70mm
Diaphragm: f11
Shutter speed: 1/125
Film used: Kodak Gold 200 ASA Print Film.
Technical information: Shot hand held. Not the best angle in an attempt to avoid the inevitable flare due to the time of day (just afternoon, lots of harsh sun).
Subject information: This dubious looking retaining wall holds back a parking lot next the the Bucket of Blood Saloon in Virginia City, Nevada. The Black shape at the top center is a full size tour bus for scale. The building materials (Railroad Rails and Ties) are leftovers from the Silver and Gold booms of the past, the oldest seem to be on the bottom.

Comment left by: John A. Lind (no e-mail specified) An interesting subject with an interesting story. You didn't park in the lot on top of all this, did you? Wouldn't blame you if you didn't hang around down here long either!

More seriously:
An interesting perspective of the wall to go with an interesting story about it. In looking at this I see other possibilities in addition to this photograph. Not necessarily "better" ones, but different. Don't know if you had much time available to spend shooting this or not. Sometimes it's possible and sometimes it isn't. If it is, and if you have some maneuvering room around it, think about exploring the subject and the nature of it from different perspectives with different focal lengths. You could get a half dozen completely different photographs from a subject such as this one.

Also look at where sun angles would be throughout an entire day. If opportunity exists to shoot it during several different times in the day, come back to exploit the different lighting that provides. It can create a completely different mood and open up possibilities for completely different photographs with the same subject.

Comment left by: Steve Goss (stevegoss@speakeasy.net) To me, the bottom few rows look like used telephone poles.
I wonder how many hundreds or thousands of people arrive in those buses and see the parking lot, but never this side. They would get a whole new perspective.
