Windows For the Dead 1.0

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Walt Wayman
Title: Windows For the Dead 1.0
Gear used: OM-4Ti + MD2 + Telescopic Auto Extension Tube 65~116 + 135/4.5 Zuiko Macro lens, no filter, and hood.
Diaphragm: f/8-11
Shutter speed: 1/125 (Just guessing.)
Film used: Fuji Provia 100F
Technical information: The abstract for TOPE 11 ended with this dare, which I tried to ignore, but simply could not resist: "...using a bellows macro lens might be a bit of a challenge..." Not being totally deranged, however, I chose the only bellows macro lens that focuses to infinity, then used the auto tube instead of the bellows. (A matter of convenience, you know.) While this technically meets the letter of the challenge, it probably violates the spirit in more ways than one. So sue me. In any event, this hand-held shot was lit (or "lighted" if you prefer) by slightly hazy mid-morning sunlight. Exposure was determined by averaged multiple spot readings. And, yes, it might've been sharper had I used a tripod. Laziness is its own reward.
Subject information: Detail on an 1870s mausoleum in an old cemetery. The windows are about 10 inches tall.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) This is great, a truly beautiful close up.

Small point of improvement would be to move the centre slightly to the left, so the picture becomes completely symmetrical, but that's just a nitpick.

Comment left by: benson (benson@gsb.haifa.ac.il) I love the blue tint in the morning light - captured wonderfully.

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Nice detail shot.

Comment left by: Ian Nichols (i.a.nichols@bris.ac.uk) 10 inches! it looks like a detail from a much bigger structure, with windows about 4 feet tall. I like the lighting, which brings out the overall circular shape and the texture in the stones at top-left.

Comment left by: Donald MacDonald (donald.macdonald@care4free.net) I love the texture in the stonework. I thought from the thumbnail it was going to be a detail of something like the Leaning Tower of Pisa; that it is so small amazes me. Great eye to spot it. Good work.

Comment left by: John A. Lind (no e-mail specified) An interesting and excellent architectural detail that exploits the absence of anything to scale its actual size. Shows very good visualization to see this possibility. It could easily be the side of a castle turret with the windows 10X the dimensions you gave. I like the horizontal repetition of shapes you've captured. A bit of cropping on the right side to make its edge the same as the left would emphasize it more (easily done).

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jamesfc@gte.net) 10 inches?? Amazing! Well, I would say that you came darn close to the challenge! Very well done and I would never have guessed those windows are that small!
