Easy come...

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Dan Mitchell
Title: Easy come...
Gear used: OM-2S + 65-200 + tripod
Diaphragm: f4
Shutter speed: 1/200 or so
Film used: Kodakcolor Gold 100
Technical information: Nothing special, just what it sounds like.
Subject information: Just opposite the building I work in, they started tearing down an old warehouse sort of structure to build a new supermarket; during the day, I was biting my nails to hope I could get home, pick up camera, and back in time to take photos. Luckily the con(de?)struction guys were hard at work well into the evening, so I managed to get some shots off while there was still something left.

It was incredible how fast a large earthmover can tear a building apart; there's lots of new development going on around here, so I'm used to seeing wood-framed buildings torn apart. This one was steel, concrete, and brick -- and it still was about as sturdy as wet paper in the face of the large orange instrument of destruction...

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Interestingly, I just saw a piece about a photographer who documented the destruction of Penn Station in NYC.

Great color, exposure, and composition.

Comment left by: Chuck Norcutt (chucknorcutt@attbi.com) Great shot. I agree with your comments about the power of the machine. I was also, just recently, watching a single story brick building being demolished in a similar fashion. But did I think to photograph it?

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) interesting to note how cleanly the brickline has be broken!

Comment left by: iwert bernakiewicz (zuiko@pi.be) Very nice picture. Buildings are far less 'permanent' as most of us think.
I think the composition is very well framed. Although there is no blur or movement one can feel the forces and the tension between crane and building. Maybe a bit less wall to the right and a bit more crane to the left, but otherwise perfect. (and the colors & evening light combine nicely as well)

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) Really like the contrast between the Orange of the machine and the blue sky.

Comment left by: Dan Mitchell (no e-mail specified) Just one thing about the framing; I'd have liked to add more machine to the left, but you can already see some of the office buildings downtown sneaking in in the background -- short of cheating with Photoshop, there wasn't a lot I could do to remove their distracting presence other than crop and hope for the best.

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) taking cue from Chris, you should title this "defenstration" since it's untitled ;)
