Gravity & Mass

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's Name: Ian Nichols
Title: Gravity & Mass
Subject: The SE corner of the University of Bristol's Department of Physics.
Equipment used: OM-1, 85/2, handheld light meter, tripod.
Film: Kodak Finegrain Release Positive, exposed as ISO 12, developed in ID-2 (1+3)
Exposure: 1/15 s at f/16
Notes: An unusual choice of film, being an orthochromatic emulsion intended for contact printing cine negatives. On the other hand it's about the finest grained film I've come across, the lack of red sensitivity doesn't matter here, and nor does the slow speed. Oh yes, and you can handle it under red safe light. It also responds well to long exposures (it's a paper emulsion on a film base), so one could take it out around dusk and do several-minute exposures to make people disappear. Must try that some time.

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Interesting choice of film. I'm unfamiliar with that. I like the shot and the perspective, exposure and DOF seem right on. I'd hang this in my office. Nice detail

Comment left by: Bob Gries (gries@nothingrhymeswithorange.com) Clean, classic, well done!

Comment left by: Walt Wayman (no e-mail specified) Very well done -- angles, detail, and a great tonal range. Now, where can I get this film that, when used at dusk, makes people disappear? I know a couple I'd like to try it on.

Comment left by: Boris Grigorov (alienspecimen@excite.com) A breath taking photograph and a perfect title for it.

Comment left by: Chuck Norcutt (chucknorcutt@attbi.com) Yes, what they all said... including the interesting note on the film.

Comment left by: John A. Lind (no e-mail specified) As with the previous photograph, excellent use of B&W to isolate and celebrate the shapes. Nice, classical composition that exploits the corner's basic vertical symmetry. Excellent choice in time of day for exploitation of the lighting angle to further celebrate the basic shapes.

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) great title on a great photo; conveys "gravity" and "massive" very well to the viewer :)

Comment left by: :Doro (no e-mail specified) impressive! Was the extra light meter necessary because of your film choice or to balance the contrast?

Comment left by: Steve Goss (stevegoss@speakeasy.net) Belongs on a book cover.

Comment left by: The Photographer (no e-mail specified) The lightmeter was used because I haven't got around to putting a battery in the OM-1 yet. I could have taken, say my OM-4 body, but I wanted to give the OM-1 some exercise.
