Subject Information: This splendidly interesting water tower is found in Ypsilanti, Michigan, where it is an important landmark. It was designed by William R. Coats in 1889, and construction was completed in 1891. While it once provided water for the city, it is now used to store water for emergency fire use. The tower stands 147 feet tall and holds 250,000 gallons of water. Three crosses were built on the tower, one above the west door and the other two inside. The workers believed the crosses would protect them during construction.
