New Steel

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Dan Mitchell
Title: New Steel
Gear used: OM-2S + 65-200/4
Diaphragm: f4, if I remember correctly
Shutter speed: about 1/250th
Film used: Kodak Gold 100
Technical information: Apologies for the image quality; this was scanned with a digital camera, because I'm on the road right now so can't get at a real scanner. There's been a lot of post-procesing to try and save it, but it's still pretty fuzzy compared to the original.
Subject information: On the way from Portland to San Fransisco on the Greyhound, while stopped at a station, I saw this building out the window of the coach; the contrast between the name and the state of repair of the building struck me, so I took the shot.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Great composition and choice of subject!

A pity the image quality isn't better, but perhaps at a later stage you get a chance to submit a better version of it.

Comment left by: Barry Bean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Great shot: Repitition, rule of thirds, asymmetry, good use of irony, and the successful conversion of an eyesore into an interesting work of art. Well done!

Comment left by: Alasdair Mackintosh (Alasdair.Mackintosh@ntlworld.com) Wonderfully ironic shot. The way that the fence sinks downwards towards the right hand edge of the picture is almost too good to be true.

As Olaf says, you really ought to resubmit it if you get the chance to rescan it. It's the sort of picture that can carry a lot of good crisp detail, and really deserves a session with a proper scanner.

Comment left by: Chris Barker (imagopus@threeshoes.co.uk) I like the texture and the shapes in this shot. I knew it would be interesting from the thumbnail, but at this size on my monitor it is even better. I really like the contrast between the fence and the corrugated iron walls - together with the ripples in the writing.
