Old Fence

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Sean Davis
Title: Old Fence
Gear used: OM-2n, Vivitar Series 1 70-210/3.5, Winder 2, Manfrotto tripod/ballhead
Diaphragm: f/5.6-ish (!)
Shutter speed: Auto
Film used: Ilford HP5
Technical information: Developed in Agfa Rodinal, printed on Ilford MGIV RC @ grade 2. First time using HP5 (or any "real" 400 speed B/W) and I was shocked by how grainy it was since I'm used to using the C-41 B/W films. Or perhaps it's my choice of developer... I plead newbie-ism! oh well, I feel the grain fits the subject matter anyway :)
Subject information: Fenceline out in the field at my in-laws acreage, near Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) I love this composition, and the usage of the shallow DOF is most excellent. Great shot!

Comment left by: Brian Swale (bj@caverock.net.nz) Somehow the use of B&W instead of colour helps the viewer concentrate their attention on the cracked, weathered timber, eroded over time; and the barbed fencing-wire, rusted and gnarled with age, having been bent through countless twists of usage and having lost its flexibility though the effects of rust.
Very effective.

Comment left by: Per Öhström (poo@chello.se) Nice grain! :-)
Actually HP5 in Rodinal is grainier than many other combinations, but the accutance is high, so it's perfect for sharp but grainy pictures. Very effective, I think, and your picture is a fine example. Great work!

Comment left by: KenN (no e-mail specified) Nice picture. The composition is spot-on. Also, grain works in this picture. Try HP5 in Ilfotec DD-X. Grain will almost disappear compared to Rodinol (or D76).
