Corrosion

Submitter's name: Olaf Greve
Title: Corrosion
Gear used: OM-4Ti + 50/3.5 Macro
Film used: Kodak Ultra 400
Exposure: 1/250th seconds at f8
Technical information: Nothing special, I just got close enough with the camera and held it still for long enough to be able to do a hand-held shot. :)
The scan is somewhat unsharp (despite the usage of an unsharp mask), but then, the scanner used is not exactly the best one that's available. :(
Subject information: This is a late version "Sherman casing" (i.e. it was used by the Sherman tank).
I am a collector of casings, and the reasons for choosing this one for TOPE 12 are that the casing carries quite some history, and that it shows. I have older casings which are in far better conditions, but I particularly liked this one for the theme, due to the heavy corrosion, showing its age.

For those of you interested in the details, it is a 76MM M26 casing, whereas the earlier versions of the Sherman used the 75MM M18 casings. The casing was obtained at a flea market in France.
Those amongst you who are into ammunition will recognise the casing to be a US (style) one (as evidenced by the numbering, and the fixed primer). An interesting detail, is the presence of the so-called "Broad arrow" (i.e. /|), which is British. Apparently this casing was made or used by the British (despite the otherwise US style casing) in the more advanced stages of World War II (i.e. the liberation of France, after D-day), when US forces were located in the UK. The primer dates back to 1943, whereas the rest of the casing has 1944 engraved in it.

Comment left by: C.H.Ling (chling@accura.com.hk) A very special kind of collection to me, interesting but my wife certainly will not allow :-) Using a warm side light (e.g. evening light) will make it more dramatic.

Comment left by: Chris Barker (imagopus@threeshoes.co.uk) I have a fair idea of the id of the photog! A very nice composition and use of colour in my view. It is surprisingly interesting in the larger image - I did not realise what it was until I read the abstract.
