Star of David

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Andreas Grunwald
Title: Star of David
Gear used: OM-4Ti + Tokina AT 28-85 mm
Diaphragm: unknown
Shutter speed: unknown
Film used: Ilford FP 4, 125 ASA
Technical information: The light was very strange and dark; like at the beginning of a tunnel. Only the top part of the door gets spots from the sun due to some open clouds.
Subject information: It was a hard day in the concentration camp of Dachau near Munich. Almost at the end I have seen the door with the star of David in the strange light and make a couple of pictures. May be black and white can explain best the feelings you will have there. Hopefully history will be in our minds forever.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) A very powerful image, which could really only be properly pulled off in B/W.

The David star is nicely lit, and along with the barbed fence it is put upon, it really drives home the eerie feeling one must have in such a dark place.

Comment left by: Roger Skully (robinsnes@comcast.net) I have been there. It was a place that had the feeling of evil. It is good that we have survived and will. Am Yisroel Chai - the nation of Israel lives.

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) Great, the star almost glows.

Comment left by: Chris (ftog@threeshoes.co.uk) A very serious photo. I think that you could sell prints of this, perhaps with higher contrast.

Comment left by: bbbean (no e-mail specified) Powerful.

Comment left by: Joel Wilcox (jowilcox@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu) Nothing to add really but bravo!

Comment left by: Alexandre Cavaco (no e-mail specified) This image could be in history book cover,
very shocking shot !

Comment left by: John Lind (no e-mail specified) This one is stunning. I've been there . . . over two decades ago . . . in heavy ground fog which accentuated the abysmally gloomy ambience. IIRC this is a sculpture that is part of a larger memorial. Everything has already been said about it technically and artistically. I believe you found and captured on film the scuptor's intent.

Comment left by: Charlie Geilfuss (cgeilfuss@dycon.com) I particularly like the differential lighting in this image. I don't know if the Star of David is a white material or bright metal, but I really like the way its brightness makes it stand out of the image.

Comment left by: Andreas Grunwald (no e-mail specified) As I have it rigth in my mind the star is out of the same material and color than the fence. It was lit by the sun to some open clouds.
