Manhattan

Submitter's name: Boris Grigorov
Title: Manhattan
Gear used: OM1 28/2.8 Handheld Meter
Diaphragm: f11
Shutter Speed: 1/60
Film Used: Kodak T-Max 400
Technical Information: Handheld on my knees. Scanned from the film on a flatbead scanner.
Additional conversion to Grayscale applied in Photoshop and used the Prepare for the Web tool to meet Olafo's size constraints.
Note: On brighter monitors the picture might look washed out, since I keep my monitors dimmer.
Subject Information I always found New Yorkers nice and friendly and thought of New York as a fun city, but was never impressed by the uninspiring architecture of concrete Manhattan. Inviting is also the last thing that comes to mind. It might be a blessing that the camera cannot record the smell. This is the only picture I ever took there and think that it faithfully represents my emotions.

Very effective upwards view and that lantern is just great! :)

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) i like the "no standing anytime" sign :)

Comment left by: Andreas Grunwald (no e-mail specified) one of my favorite pictures from the B&W theme; interesting
perspective, good shot, contrast could be slightly higher

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) Good to hear you weren't standing but on your knees - got to obey those signs !

Gives a great sense of being "dominated" by the landscape.

Comment left by: Marc Lawrence (no e-mail specified) I know this is very "Pop Culture", but I see "Neo" at the end of "The Matrix" looking up, preparing to zoom into the sky like Superman...and feel the yearning to do so, and escape the city-canyons. Definitely a favourite photo.

Comment left by: Lama (no e-mail specified) Yeah, you've effectively captured your feeling of being dwarfed, not elevated by the architecture. I'm not a 'city person' either so this speaks for me as well.

Comment left by: John A. Lind (no e-mail specified) Excellent composition with a whimsical touch from the sign. The buildings give a feeling of "SRO" and yet the sign states no standing is allowed. Captures well the "urban canyon" feeling one can have when surrounded by massive "vertical streets."

You're right about the possibility of looking slightly washed out; it does on my monitor. I turned the brightness down to view it based on your remarks and it looked much better to me.

Comment left by: Damon Wood (no e-mail specified) Cool composition. A little over-exposed?
