Submitter's name: Damon Wood
Title: Franklin Staircase
Gear used: OM-4Ti, Zuiko 28mm f2.8, Hoya (R25) Kodak Professional RFS 3600 Film Scanner
Diaphragm: f/8
Shutter speed: 1/60 ~ 1/125 (Auto)
Film used: Agfa Scala 200 (rated @ ISO 200)
Subject information: Mount Franklin, 40km East of Walpole, the Great Southern Region of Western Australia. Mount Franklin is a major source of Australian 'bottled water'. This particular mount is around 480m high. The walk to the top is great fun and one of the best places for a 'nature-fix' I have ever encountered.
Technical information: The conditions were screaming for B&W. There was a lot of fog and cloud coupled with a very bright afternoon sun. This was making colour shooting extremely diffifult so I decided to pull out one of my favourite films. The red filter was necessary to emphasize the cloud and fog formations as seen above the stairs. Composition though was extremely important and the 28mm was perfect! (I also feel the scanning has let the picture down).

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) I like the overall dark tones in this shot, the usage of the leading lines is also very nice.

Comment left by: Andreas Grunwald (no e-mail specified) very good shot, superb leading lines and a interesting sky makes the picture brilliant

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) Strong composition. What's at the top ?

Comment left by: Chris (ftog@threeshoes.co.uk) What a sky! And what a smashing contrast between horrible, rough concrete and smoooooth gentle sky. This is a parable describing the struggle heavenwards on earth...

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jamesfc@gte.net) Great image and perfect for B&W. Almost reminds me of one of the old B&W German stylistic films such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

Comment left by: Joel Wilcox (jowilcox@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu) You've extracted a very surreal composition from a natural setting -- perfect for this theme. Congrats!

Comment left by: Marc Lawrence (no e-mail specified) This is the kind of picture I wish I could take, but never seem to pull off (candid portraiture comes a little more natural to me...but the simple and semi-abstract appeals to me more. I love the texture in those steps.

Comment left by: Andy Radcliffe (AndyJRadcliffe@manx.net) The contrast between the sky and the steps is what really makes it work for me - that and great composition too. One of my favourites.

Comment left by: Damon Wood (no e-mail specified) Wayne, at the top is a panoramic view of the region, with ocean and the hinterlands in view. There is also a historical plaque with a, what looks to be, a meteorological building.

Hope that helps!

Comment left by: poo (no e-mail specified) A beatiful picture of a concrete(?) staircase! Great work!
