Cross at Durham

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's Name: Ian Skelly
Title: Cross at Durham
Gear Used: OM4, Tamron SP 35-80 (sorry)
Diagphram Unknown
Shutter Speed: 1/60 (ish) with +1/3 stop extra
Film used: Fuji Superia 200 colour,
Tech info: Colour negative scanned to 4000dpi and modified in selected areas for curves and unsharp mask. I also flipped the left half of the plinth to the right for symetery and to lose a shadow. Finally converted to mono by taking the red channel and final tweaking with curves.
Subject information The cross is set just outside of Durham Cathedral, UK. Shot taken 23 March 2003 early evening as a grab shot. This works well in colour although the conversion to mono and compressing to 72dpi has given a more ominous feel than the original.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) I wondered how the wicked effect on the trees in the background came about, but then I read your description well and I assume it is due to the way you "cheated". ;)

Neat effect, but don't you all be going out now converting colour shots to B/W! ;)

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) Beautiful tones. I like the trees in the background.

Comment left by: Chris (ftog@threeshoes.co.uk) Excellent shot. The symmetry is well interrupted by the rather ghostly figure crouched at the base. Of course I should have thought more of the photographer if it had been mono film carefully printed to look like this, but I could not have done it.

Comment left by: Joel Wilcox (jowilcox@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu) I'll bet this makes a magnificent print.

Comment left by: Damon Wood (no e-mail specified) Interesting effects!
