Corner

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: John A. Lind
Title: Corner
Gear used: OM-4 + 24/2 Zuiko MC
Diaphragm: Not Recorded
Shutter speed: 1/30th
Film used: Kodachrome 64
Technical information: Started to use the 35/2 Zuiko MC to compose this perspective of the shed corner, but it looked bland through the viewfinder.  Put the 24/2 on and the noticeably exaggerated perspective looked much more energetic.  Focus distance was near minimum to increase radical perspective and keep a door on the left out of the frame.  Weather was overcast, but the flat lighting still did not lose texture detail.  Placed critical focus on board ends (the corner), then stopped down to maximize depth of field until shutter speed was 1/30th, as long as I dared to shoot it held.  Checked depth of field preview in viewfinder and it looked acceptable.  Also placed corner off-center to keep it more interesting and provide more energy to a horizontal composition.
Subject information: Very recently painted shed found on a farm.  The slat siding is obviously very old, weathered and repainted many times.  Found the texture of the slats interesting along with their pattern using a radical corner perspective showing their ends.

Very strong and effective. Amazing detail on the wood as well!

Also, this shot very nicely combines both theme-alternatives. The texture part is obvious, and the pattern one is nicely formed by the lines.

Comment left by: Mickey (no e-mail specified) Looks like there was some direct sun, as there are distinct shadows on the tops of the boards from the planks above. The texture is nicely enhanced. That wood has a lot of years on it. Funny that as a photograph, this wall could easily adorn another wall.

Comment left by: Steve Goss (no e-mail specified) Nice pattern & texture. Excellent perspective.
The boards all seem to have a constant gap between them. Is this shed for drying corn, or something?

Comment left by: John A. Lind (no e-mail specified) Don't know what it was originally built for. Doubt it was for corn. Could have been for storing wheat (in the trailer) after it was harvested. Whatever it was for, it's obvious the spacing is for air circulation and ventilation. Now it holds an enormous pile of wood (and sometimes I think it's the pile of wood that's holding it up).

Comment left by: Wayne Shumaker (om4t@zuik.net) I think the larger the print of this the better. Maybe I've spent too much time repairing clapboards myself, some full of mouse crap with smelly insulation behind it, but I certainly like pondering this shot and its essence of texture. I know you are a very compentent 'technical' photographer, but you should spend more time just taking more pictures. At first I though a B&W would be nice, but the color really does add rather than subtract from the character of this shot. Makes me wonder if I like this shot because of my own history or whether it has universal appeal?
