Submitter's name: Jim Caldwell
Title: Web
Gear used: E-10 with built-in flash for fill. Lens set at 34mm
Diaphragm: F2.4
Shutter speed: 1/125
Film used: digital
Technical information: Hand held.  I set the flash for 1 stop under exposure and opened the aperture to blur the background as much as possible.  This is part of a stock collection I've created on Florida spiders.
Subject information: This is a Spiny Orb Weaver spider, one of the most unusual and colorful in the south.  They generally build their webs at night, but continue to occupy them during the day.  This guy was in the same location for nearly 3 months before he (she?) finally disappeared.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) The lines of the web are nicely displayed against that "bokeh background".

The colours of the spider are very nice as well.

BTW: the spider seems to have a very weird shape to me, it almost looks like it has no legs?!?

Comment left by: Kurt Klein (no e-mail specified) The spider mirrors the shape of the web or vice-versa; the round, white part of the spider is like the central part of the web (the part with only radiating strands), and the spines are reminiscent of the acute angles at the outside of the web, all making for a great composition. Also, the white blurs in the background strengthen the image by giving the eyes somewhere else to go without being distracting. Very nice.

Comment left by: Steve Goss (no e-mail specified) I didn't know spiders were into punk rock.

Excellent shot. Awesome bokeh.

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jamesfc@gte.net) Olaf, these spiders ARE very weird looking! Their legs are quite small and in the photo, the head and legs are at the bottom of the spider. The size of those red 'spines' almost seem to be too large for this little critter!
