Rusty Winch Cable

Comments made by the photographer

Submitters name: Wayne Culberson
Title: Rusty Winch Cable
Gear used: OM2s + Zuiko 100/2.8 + 81a filter
Diaphragm: f2.8
Shutter speed: 1/60
Film used: Kodak Elitechrome 100 extra color
Technical information: The filter was used to keep salt spray off the lens, and because its what I had on at the time to warm up some mid-day ocean shots. But it also brought out the color of the rust a bit better. The picture was hand held, as the vibration of the small car ferry would have made it very difficult to use a tripod without shaking the camera. The round drum of the cable winch made it impossible to get all the roll in focus at that aperture, and using only the available light there was, was pushing the limits of hand held.
Subject information: This was a cable winch used to lower or raise the ramp of a small car ferry which crosses to Deer Isalnd. The salt spray from the Bay of Fundy keeps the cable quite rusty. I was taking some scenic ocean shots when I noticed this pattern.

Comment left by: Steve Goss (no e-mail specified) Nice texture and patterns. The diagonals and curvature help too.
