By the Dawn's Early Light

Submitter's name: Walt Wayman
Title: By the Dawn's Early Light
Gear used: OM-4Ti + MD2 + 80-200/2.8 Tamron at about 130mm
Diaphragm: f/22 (trying for some depth of field)
Shutter speed: Between 1/30 and 1/60
Film used: Fuji Superia X-Tra 400
Technical information: Hand-held, with the lens braced atop a chair back. Exposure was determined by spot readings. The negative was scanned on an HP S20 at 2400 dpi to a TIFF file, tuned up ever so slightly in Picture Window Pro 3.1, then reduced to a TOPE size JPEG.
Subject information: A 100-year-old chair, a 40-year-old handgun and gunbelt, and a brand-new box of ammo, caught at the crack of dawn on the porch of an old cabin on a mountaintop in Tennessee. We were gearing up to go camping for a few days along a big, roaring creek miles deep in black bear and ornery Russian boar country, so the old Ruger .41 magnum came along. As usual, it wasn’t needed, but having it on the hip while negotiating pig trails through rhododendron thickets provided a level of reassurance not obtained from the OM around the neck.

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) Great composition. I can understand why many people collect guns.

Comment left by: Mickey (no e-mail specified) Multiple patterns in a tightly knit subject matter. Could easily be a magazine cover or industrial poster. Well done!

Comment left by: Anonymous Visitor I agree with Mickey; turn it vertical (90 deg. clockwise) and it's a mag cover with space in the lower left for some of the typical cover printing. Or, in landscape mode, this would be the top, or near the top with banner above and the rest on plain background below. I like the use of the basket weave on the chair in the background.

BTW, I used to pack a Ruger .357 magnum in the Arizona desert loaded with "bird shot" rounds for rattlesnakes. Fortunately, I never had to use it, but fully understand the reassurance a sidearm can provide. Had to kill a couple with large rocks before I started carrying the handgun, and it was unnerving.

Well done!

Comment left by: Steve Goss (no e-mail specified) Well done on the depth of field. I like the composition, but to me the styrofoam holder for the ammunition looks anachronistic - probably because most of my shooting was done with .22 rifles at camp. I don't remember styrofoam 30 years ago at the camp rifle ranges, and I'm sure it was something else 40 years ago. If you had an antique ammunition box, I think the results would be stunning.

Comment left by: JIm Caldwell (jamesfc@gte.net) Wonderful composition and nice lighting!

Comment left by: Roy Talbot (roytalbot@hotmail.com) Wonderful photo of an old Ruger flat top 3 screw Blackhawk. Everything is in focus, that's what I like to see. Texture from the basket to the smooth leather makes the photo.

Comment left by: David Carter (no e-mail specified) It also looks great in Black and White
