Pipes of Christus Koning Kerk Organ, Antwerp

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Peter Leyssens
Title: Pipes of Christus Koning Kerk Organ, Antwerp
Gear used: OM-4Ti + 90/2 + wallet
Diaphragm: Dunno, probably f2
Shutter speed: Auto, around 10s
Film used: Fuji Sensia2
Technical information: I pushed my way through the crowds, gathered on the choir's balcony to listen to the organist's explanation. Having reached the balcony's edge, I dazzled at the 15 meters of empty space below me and decided it was time to risk a camera. I rearranged some credit cards in my wallet to make a nice wedge, set the camera down on it and took a glance through the viewfinder, which required a weird side-ways bent that hurts my back to this very day. Many people grumbled as the cheerful beeps of the self-timer started, but I didn't budge: no-one was going to come near to my unstable construction so close to a lethal drop for OM equipment...
Subject information: Antwerp's Christus Koningkerk (kerk=church) was built in 1930 by the German organ manufacturer Klais, for the occasion of the world exhibition. It's the second largest instrument in Antwerp, with over 5000 pipes it's only surpassed by the cathedral's magnificent Schijven organ from 1891. The design of the organ matches the sign of the times surprisingly well, as I find the design to closely resemble that of the movie "Metropolis". The church's design, too, is rather peculiar, and many people first think that it's a mosque, with the dark domes and the square minaret-like tower showing an interesting ecclecticism of influences from Islamic as well as modern architecture.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) A very nice shot.
This was composed really well, and you've got lots of courage to put a 4Ti + 90/2 at such risk 'only' for TOPE :)))
