The Big Chicken

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Walt Wayman
Title: The Big Chicken
Gear used: OM-4T + MD2 + Tamron SP 17/3.5 + Tiffen circular polarizer
Diaphragm: f/8
Shutter speed: 1/250, approximately
Film used: Fuji NPH.  Maybe not the film of choice for this kind of shot, but it's how I finished off a roll taken at our youngest grandson's birthday party, for which NPH was the film of choice.
Technical information: Shot hand-held out the driver's side window of the OM-4Runner from the parking lot.  Exposure was based on a couple of averaged spot readings. The negative was scanned to a tiff file on an Epson Perfection 3200 at 3200 d.p.i., given a bit of perspective correction in Picture Window Pro, then reduced to a TOPE-size jpeg.
Subject information: Obviously, not a photograph I intend to print large and hang on the wall, but it is a picture of a genuine landmark.  Driving directions given in the northwestern Atlanta suburbs more often than not begin with the question, "You know where the Big Chicken is?"  If you admit that you do, then you will be told how to get where you want to go starting from the Big Chicken.
Dozens of other businesses in the area, from automobile dealers to restaurants, advertise their location in relation to the Big Chicken: "Four blocks east of the Big Chicken," "A mile south of the Big Chicken," and so on.  In a landlocked city, it's the equivalent of a lighthouse.

Comment left by: Duncan Paterson (no e-mail specified) Great landmark, especially in such bright colours.

Comment left by: Gary Teller (gmteller@mindspring.com) The first landmark that came to my mind was the Big Chicken but I've been too busy to get "all the way over" to Cobb County. Besides, I had a hunch that this particular photographer would shoot it. Using a 17mm lens really gives an enhanced perspective on a true landmark. Too bad still photos don't all capturing the moving mouth and eyes.

Comment left by: Chris (ftog at threeshoes.co.uk) Good colours - nice and gaudy!

Comment left by: Garry D. Lewis (glewis747@aol.com) How appropiate that a "big chicken" should be located in Cobb county. }:^)>
I like it, but would have cropped the left side. But that's just an opinion from a dumb cluck. }:^)>

Comment left by: Jeff Keller (no e-mail specified) Slight overcorrection of perspective adds to the excellent picture. Good choice of focal length. I probably would hang it on my wall.

Comment left by: Alan Barrow (no e-mail specified) Very nice shot that captures the feel of the era when the Big Chicken was made. For what it is worth, a while back it looked like the Chicken might not survive. This generated much concern for the area pilots as it was a major navaid!
