Life At The Top

Submitter's name: Siddiq
Title: Life At The Top
Gear used: OM-1n, Zuiko 28/3.5 + hood, monopod
Aperture: f3.5
Shutter speed: 2 seconds
Film used: Fujicolor Superia 400
Technical information: Lens focused for cabin occupants seen in silhouette, camera mounted on removed centre column of tripod which rested on interior rails for support. Shutter ring set to B, tripped by selftimer (trick to get 2 second shutter). Film developed/scanned by Fuji, tiny crop and light sharpening post exposure. Harsh contrast due to consumer grade film.
Subject information: Looking at the BAA London Eye capsule at its zenith. I wanted to go up a bit earlier to have twilight but the lines were incredibly long. Had a tough choice picking one of the other abstracts of the same landmark, some of which were near impossible to recognize. In the end, a landmark is only a landmark because people make it, and the human element in this photo (recognized after I got the rolls back) lends it some charm. Parts of central London visible below capsule and also reflected on it.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) For me this shot has it all: the landmark, the people and the city in which it is located.

Add to that the nice play of straight lines, colours and those lovely silhouetes, and the recipe is complete for a most excellent entry.

Well done!

Comment left by: Duncan Paterson (no e-mail specified) I like the space-age feel to this shot. Many different contrasting elements too: the straight lines of the struts, the smooth curves of the capsule, the people inside and city lights below. Well done from me too!

Comment left by: the photog (no e-mail specified) thanks for the comments

the two other contenders were this color shot and this <in b/w.

Comment left by: photog (no e-mail specified) dooof, it's me yes, why didn't YOU submit anything? new theme (oct 14 to nov 30) is motion/movement, you had better enter or i'll come over and take your camera!

Comment left by: Roger Wesson (roger@world-traveller.org) Your other two contenders are good shots but this one is on another level - really spectacular. The reflection of the skyline in the capsule looks superb, and the figures silhouetted by the blue light are very cool Great work!
