Sydney at Dusk

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Adam Bolt
Title: Sydney at Dusk
Gear used: OM-4 + 50 f1.8 + tripod + cable release + cokin filter system + sunset grad filter
Diaphragm: f11
Shutter speed Unrecorded Approx 1/2-1 sec
Film Used Kodak Elite 100 speed... Ironically this was old stock that I purchased for $1.00... I think it helped with the colour shift a little ;-)
Technical information: I used the 50mm to help cut down barrel distortion and because I know the 50 is a nice sharp performer. I then used the multi spot function on the OM with the lower part of the grad filter and spotted twice off the buildings to the left and then once off the sky to get a good ratio between the two. The grad filter was then put in place to cut out the brightness in the sky a little and then the tripod was set so that I had little curve through horizon as I took a series of 5 shots. The exposure was locked using the memory function.
I noticed that the buildings to the right need to be straightened in Photoshop... That will just have to wait... There is too much work involved with this type of image... but its good to see how effective it can be!
Subject information: Although this was shot outside the TOPE time frame... I had specifically taken this image for the event knowing that I couldn't get back down to Sydney to take another reshoot.
Your TOPE's host's comments: I decided to allow this shot even though it was taken somewhat out of the shooting interval. Furthermore, as the '640 pixels restriction' (as shown on this very page) yields an image too small to fully appreciate this fantastic shot, I have added a link to the full size version as well.
Enjoy!

Comment left by: Marc Lawrence (mlawrence@cfp.com.au) Hey, I think I've been there before ~grin~. Those colours are beautiful! Are you sure you didn't just buy this from the Ken Duncan gallery at The Rocks? (joking! Purely meant as a compliment) You've picked a great place to take the photo from, with the added advantage of not looking at that sore-thumb Blues Point Tower. It'd be nice to see a verticle triptych of them (one from before, with sunlight, and one after, with more nighttime lights on - the latter would look especially good when Luna Park finally turns all its lights on again). It would also be good Photoshop practice for you ;-> (Oh, and thanks, Olaf, for linking to the bigger version). Just curious, how long did the all the shots take, as I know the light can change pretty quickly. Were you all set up, and just snapped away pretty much one after the other with a quick turn to a tripod mark between each one?

Where was the shot taken from, Blues Point ?

Comment left by: Chris (ftog at threeshoes.co.uk) Stunning colour, well composed.
