Compass

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Marc Lawrence
Title: Compass
Gear used: OM-1 + Zuiko 35/2.8 + tripod + cable release
Diaphragm: f8 or f11
Shutter speed: 1/1000?
Film used: Kodak Black & White+
Technical information: I was essentially testing the Zuiko 35/2.8, with whom I'd never got along. The resulting scanned print has had some "Tone Balance" done, and marginal cropping.
Subject information: This "landmark" ("carved" by the landowner, obviously with a chainsaw) was not the one planned for TOPE15 (a trig point about a kilometre away was intended), but this was a serendipitous discovery. It was early morning, but the light was still too harsh, and even the digital "Tone Balance" hasn't saved it. This, however, was the best of my TOPE 15 attempts. As you can tell, I'm none too happy with my efforts. I'll try again next year.

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) is that stump meant to represent a map of the continent oz in general or a small local area? anyhow, i certainly love the "crackled paper" texture on stump

Comment left by: Chris (ftog at threeshoes.co.uk) This is another intriguing shot. It comes out fine for me as simplicity suits monochrome.

Comment left by: The photographer (no e-mail specified) To siddiq...

No, this was just made by the landowner along similar "landmarks" you sometimes see at lookouts and other tourist-frequented spots, where there's a "compass" that points to the four winds, and other lines radiating from the centre that point out major locations of interest (even if over the horizon). The landowner seems to have added such things each time we go there (the last was a ram's skull at the chopping-log, and an easel made out of deadwood up near the highpoint of the property).
