Facies Luna

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: John A. Lind
Title: Facies Luna
Gear used: OM-1n + 300/4.5 F.Zuiko + 2X-A TC
Diaphragm: f/11 (f/5.6 on aperture ring)
Shutter speed: 1/125th
Film used: Ektachrome E200
Technical information: One of a series of photographs at various shutter speeds.  This particular photograph was deliberately underexposed to create greater contrast between the darker major mares, and the lighter highlight of a Palus.  This tends to provide more modeling of the surface texture illuminated more directly by the sun.  However, it relinquishes surface detail at the terminator into deep shadow.  E200 was selected not so much for the lunar series, but for other astro-photographs that would require long exposures.  E200 has zero reciprocity failure until exposures exceed ten seconds, and it has more red sensitivity at 656 nm for hydrogen-alpha emission nebulae than other E-6 films.  Opportunity for nebulae photographs that would have made use of these characteristics didn't materialize when the lunar photographs were made.  Otherwise I would likely have used Provia 100F.
Subject information: Moon at 1st Quarter.  Mares Tranquillitatis, Crisium and Fecunditatis, along with Palus Somnii are major features that form what appear to be a very prominent facial profile.  It is most recognizable for about a week starting with a wide crescent, continuing through the first quarter and ending with a gibbous moon.  This is not the "Man In the Moon" which is the approximate outline of a complete person in the same region.
