Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Funny landmark; a gigantic kiwi fruit. :)

I like the diversity (and humor in some) of the landmarks.

Comment left by: Duncan Paterson (no e-mail specified) A fantastic landmark! The human element really makes it I think. It would be interesting to see a wider shot which shows its surroundings. Other giant fruit?

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) even the clouds seem to radiate from the kiwi fruit. what's the story behind this landmark?

Comment left by: Brian Swale (...) It is a trendy thing of the last 10 years or so for small regions or townships in New Zealand to erect giant statues or monuments to whatever extra-ordinary thing it is they produce or are famous for.

So there is a giant statue of a brown trout at Gore, one of a Chinook salmon at Rakaia, one of a crayfish (marine lobster) at Kai( =food) koura( =crayfish), one of a carrot at Ohakune, and one of a "Lemon & Paeroa" aerated water bottle at Paeroa. I don't remember what else. There is/was a postage stamp series with many of them

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) those names sound rather hawaiinish, or polynesian. wasnt NZ an english colony though?

Comment left by: Brian Swale ( ... ) Yes, the Queen of England is the Queen of New Zealand too.
New Zealand Maori people are Polynesians, and I think the most recent colonists among them came from the Cook Islands originally, on long, twin-hulled canoes, some 750 - 800 years ago. Most of the previous colonising races are either extinct now or largely absorbed into the current tribes.
