Submitter's name: Walt Wayman
Title: Splish-Splash
Gear used: OM-4Ti + MD2 + M.18V Control Grip + 10m Relay Cord + Tamron 300/2.8 + Olympus 1.4X-A + 2X Tamron ND filter + Manfrotto 3221WN tripod + Manfrotto 405 head + T45 (off camera on a Cullmann 2903 tripod with a Bogen 3025 head) + 5m TTL cord + AC adapter 2 + 50 ft. orange extension cord + comfy chair for photographer + Olympus Magellan 8x42 Exwp binoculars
Diaphragm: f/16
Shutter speed: 1/60
Film used: Fuji Provia 100F
Technical information: The camera was positioned about 15 feet from the bird bath, with the T45 about 5 feet from it. At f/16 with the 1.4X-A (-1 stop) and the 2X ND filter (-1 stop), the effective aperture was f/32, which forced the T45 into a full dump, resulting in the longest possible flash duration it is capable of, which is approximately 1/1000 sec. The flash gave the water some sparkle and was fast enough to freeze most of the flying droplets, but was still slow enough to allow some blur in the bird's wings. The correct exposure in the natural light at the time would have been f/5.6 @ 1/60. Shooting at a setting five stops under that prevented ghosting.

The slide was scanned on an Epson Perfection 3200 at 3200 d.p.i, then given some minimal adjustment in Picture Window Pro 3.1 and reduced to TOPE size.
Subject information: A tufted titmouse bathing. This fiberglass stump birdbath is in a clump of hemlocks about 30 feet from our front door, so it made an inviting target for the use of lots of gear when it didn't need to be toted a long way. I sat inside, behind a glass storm door, with the control grip in one hand and an appropriate beverage in the other. The binoculars were used to keep an eye on the LCD frame counter on the MD2 and the ready light on the T45.

Fortunately you had lots of time to set up all that gear ;) The result certainly makes the trouble very worthwhile!

Comment left by: Mickey Trageser (no e-mail specified) Excellent photo! You planned it well, and used some great gear to get it done. I didn't note any mention of an adult beverage.... ;-) Nice work!

Comment left by: Jeff Keller (no e-mail specified) Great picture for this TOPE. I like how you blurred the wings while the water drops are crystal sharp.

Comment left by: Chris (ftog at threeshoes.co.uk) Good idea, well executed.
