Sudden Gust.

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Alan Wayman
Title: Sudden Gust.
Gear used: OM-2n, 50mm 1.8, tripod
Diaphragm: f16
Shutter speed: not recorded (but quite slow)
Film used: Agfa Vista 100
Technical information: Very bright and contrasty early afternoon, 2n picked up exposure from shadow area of gate - slowed exposure down and burned out highlights. Vista isn't good at high contrast scenes. Camera tripod mounted and self-timer fired. Image scanned @300dpi, cropped, resized and sharpened a little in Photoshop.
Subject information: I finally caught a picture of that gust of wind that's been following me around for the past ten years. Every time I get ready for an outdoor shot of a flower, especially a closeup, on a perfectly still day, along comes the gust, eight and a half seconds after I release the self timer (so I can see the plant move but haven't got time to stop the shot). So here's a portrait of the gust, playing havoc with the yellow briars beside a gate that hasn't been opened in fifty years. No wind before I set up the shot or after I moved on. So, on the one hand, a nuisance and a wasted shot, but on the other, the movement contrasts quite nicely against the immobility of the ancient gate. Win some, lose some.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) This image seems almost surreal: a very static scene, with just movement on the tree on the left hand side. Cool!

Comment left by: Chris (ftog at threeshoes.co.uk) This grew on me. Its effect was limited until I read your tale, and it is a great example of a picture that is complete only once you have told the story as well.

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jamesfc@gte.net) I kept coming back to this image - very subtle, but interesting movement! Well, this time that gust was your friend!
