Horse race

Submitter's name: Bob Docherty
Title: Horse race
Gear used: OM4T + Winder 2 + Tamron 80-200 2.8 LD
Diaphragm: f8
Shutter speed: 1/125
Film used: Fuji NPS 160
Subject information: My first real try at panning and first roll using this lens. This was the best of 2 sequences with the Winder. Taken at Churchill Downs in Louisville the final Saturday of the Fall Meet. I took my 3 children to their first horse race. My grandfather used to breed thorobreds and my father owned and lost money on them. I've never been bitten by the horse racing bug, but do enjoy an occasional visit to the track. This TOPE dragged me out to lose my OM money.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) A fantastic shot!
I love the way you see (virtually) no movement on the jockeys and the horses' heads, whereas their legs tell you that they're actually going in a fast galop.
Also, the movement trails on the background are about perfect, and placing the horses on the left hand side of the image (such that they "race into the frame") is icing on the cake.
Great work!

Comment left by: Chris (ftog at threeshoes.co.uk) Good shot; a technique that I have tried with varying success. I agree with you about horse-racing: it is probably fixed anyway...

Comment left by: Tiziana (tciaghi@yahoo.it) fantastic pic...very well done !

Comment left by: Tim Hughes (Hi100@sbcglobal.net) Very nice, good framing. Just like Muybridge's original photograph for Leyland Stanford, this "proves" that the horses do take all four hooves of the ground when galloping!

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jamesfc@gte.net) Not an easy shot, but you really did a great job! All the more rewarding for a first try! The sense of movement in this picture is great with the blurred background, the horses legs, and nicely contrasted with the sharp images of the horses and riders.

Comment left by: Jon Mitchell (no e-mail specified) Wonderful Shot, really captures the motion of the horses perfectly. Particularly, as Jim said, the contrast between the horses legs and their bodies.

Comment left by: James N. McBride (jnmcbr@srv.net) This shot really depicts the speed and intensity of the moment. The placement of the horses at the left is effective. I guess it gives the horses someplace to run too. The only thing missing is the sound and the flying dirt.
