Insomnia

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: James Royall
Title: Insomnia
Gear used: OM2n + 35-70/3.6 + tripod + cable release.
Diaphragm and shutter: Don't remember exactly, but somewhere around f8 + 1/2 second
Film used: Ilford HP5 pushed one stop.
Technical information: The film did not need to be pushed for this shot as I had the tripod, but I was trying to get an in-car image (none of which worked out very well). I let the camera take care of the exposure on auto.
Subject information: This is part of the North Circular in London, which only looks this deserted at about 5am on a Sunday morning. The shot is taken from a footbridge over the road, which then rises up to be higher than the viewpoint. I like the road with no traffic on it and light trails from cars looked a bit ordinary, so the metallic tanker on the side road reflected the street lights nicely. The original image is portrait format and shows more road, which meant the tanker got a bit lost. I tried various crops and the square format worked the best.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Cool to see this effect in B/W for once.
I also like the various leading lines of the stripes and lanterns a lot.

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jamesfc@gte.net) Nicely composed - I like the sense of movement on the left hand side of the shot contrasted with the empty highway. B&W was a wise choice!

Comment left by: James Olson (james_olson@hotmail.com) Nice tonality in the print, and I like the composition. What developer and time did you use for the HP-5?

Comment left by: Alasdair Mackintosh (tope@toomanybooks.org) Lovely tonal values. The blacks are deep and rich, while the road surface has just the right level of detail. Well done.

Comment left by: James R (james@phorensic.com) This was developed at a lab, using D76 I discovered.

Comment left by: Gary Edwards (no e-mail specified) I like the composition and the square format works very well. It gets the point across, but I long for a single car or pedestrian. Then, maybe the point really is getting the idea of movement across without a single car or pedestrian. Nice black and white.
