OM1n

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Wayne Culberson
Title: OM1n
Gear Used: OMPC + 50/1.8 + Vivitar 20mm extension tube + Osawa ND4X filter + Tiffen Circular Polarizer filter + tripod + cable release + white paper reflector.
Diaphragm: f16
Shutter speed: 16 seconds
Film used: Kodak Elitechrome 100 EC
Technical information: I tried different lengths of extension, and settled on 20mm to get the desired magnification I wanted. I knew I would need the light loss of the extension tube. I had also chosen an overcast day in order to cut down the light, and set up the shoot near a window, using the white paper reflector to fill in some darker spots. To find the time needed, I first measured the time it took for the self-timer lever to make a full stroke, and found it to be about 15 seconds from the time I could get my hand out of the picture. I then wound the OM1n, and set the self-timer lever to the maximum position. I took a light reading with the OMPC using a green scribbler cover as a grey card (it looked about middle grey to me), as I thought the scene would fool the meter on the OMPC even in ESP. I knew then I would need the ND4X and polarizer for further light loss. I then took another light reading with the filters in place at f1.8, with the OMPC set on manual and 1 sec., as it would not give a reading set on B. I then switched the camera to B, focused on the self-timer switch, and turned the diaphragm down to f16, calculating that that would need a 16 second exposure to be correct. I then set the self-timer on the OM1n in motion, and opened the shutter on the OMPC with a cable release as soon as I could get my hand out of the frame. I timed the exposure with the second hand on my wrist watch.
Subject information: I am trying to force myself away from mostly all scenics and nature shots, so I rejected all the shots I had taken of flowing water, etc. In keeping with the obvious requirement of using Olympus gear, I decided that I would use an Olympus camera as the subject as well as for taking the picture. The self-timer lever on the OM1n was the only external moving part I could think of, so I decided what better subject could I choose than the classic OM1n. I wish I had taken more care in blowing the dust off the blacker parts of the camera.

Very nice subtle motion effect.

Comment left by: Mickey Trageser (no e-mail specified) Wow. My self timer didn't spin like that! ;-) Great idea and result. Your exposure toils paid off.

Comment left by: chris (ftog at threeshoes.co.uk) Great idea, nicely executed. I like the exposure and balance of tones around the camera.

Comment left by: Donald MacDonald (donald.macdonald@care4free.net) Hey, your self-timer's bust. The arm's broken off...
Clever stuff, well done! Too complicated for me...!

Comment left by: Roy Talbot (roytalbot@hotmail.com) Never mind the dust. Your not trying to sell the camera. The dust just shows how clear your shot was. I liked this photo for it's simple motion.

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jamesfc@gte.net) It took me a moment to realize where the motion was - d'oh! Nice shot and very subtle movement - very clever idea!

Comment left by: Charles Sdunek (no e-mail specified) I really like this one. It is the perfect execution of an idea I once had. Very nice.
