Eiffel Tower Elevator

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Don Shedrick
Title: Eiffel Tower Elevator
Gear used: OM-1n + Zuiko 28/f2.8
Diaphragm: about f16
Shutter speed: about 1/30
Film used: Kodachrome 64
Technical information: I used the 28mm for depth of field and to get everything in the picture I wanted for desired perspective.
Subject information: The lower of two lifts that take tourists to the top of the world famous Eiffel Tower. Taken looking up through the glass ceiling of the small area where you wait for the next car. The car follows the varying curve of the pillar of the tower up to the second platform level. The summit of the tower can be seen through the steel structure at the top of the photo. Outside of the car riding on a platform just below the car can be seen a mannequin dressed up as the operator to show how the car used to be operated before the controls were modernized. The views of Paris from the top are spectacular. At over 1000 feet, the tower was the tallest man made structure in the world when built in 1889, and remained so until the Empire State Building surpassed it in the early 1930s.

Comment left by: Garry Lewis (garrylewis747@earthlink.net) I think the choice of lens works very well with the subject and composition. MY only critique would be the
upper yellow machine is too close to the re-bar for me. I'd like it a little higher to keep you even more from falling to the bottom of the photo.

Comment left by: Scott Gomez (no e-mail specified) I spent some time gazing at this shot before reading the description trying to figure out just what direction it was taken. It at first gives one the impression the direction of view is down, vice up--at least to me. Additionally, the business gives one lots to discover.

Good preservation of highlight and shadow detail and a very interesting viewpoint.

Comment left by: Gregg Iverson (no e-mail specified) Reminds me of something Esher would have drawn. Busy but very interesting to look at.
