Sterling Weed's Imperial Orchestra

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Morgan Sparks
Title: Sterling Weed's Imperial Orchestra
Gear used: OM-1 with 35mm f/2.8 Zuiko. The meter's off;
Diaphragm: I shot wide open (i.e. f2.8)
Shutter Speed: I tried various speeds. I think this is 1/15 or 1/30
Film used: Fujicolor 400
Technical information: I used some flash on other shots, which were really flat. It was hard to get as close as I wanted, and after cropping the band lost its pianist.
Subject information: Sterling Weed's Imperial Orchestra is performing under a tent, about 1 AM at the Discover Jazz festival in Burlington, Vermont. Mr. Weed, under the red light and playing baritone sax, is 99 years old. Sterling started his jazz band in 1928, in St. Albans, Vermont, a railroad and farming town where he still lives. His line-up for 2000 is shown above, playing "Heartaches". I'm told the drummer, a State legislator, is a retired submarine commander and the woman on trumpet is also Mr. Weed's caregiver and housekeeper.

Comment left by: Barry Bean (bbbean@beancotton.com) I play in a couple of community bands myself, and this prefectly captures the spirit.

Comment left by: Scott Nelson (scottcnelson@4dv.net) Somehow we forget that "night photography" means indoors as well as out.

Comment left by: Wiliam Wagenaar (wiliam2@wish.net) I can allmost hear them.

Comment left by: Eric Bushey (ejbushey@lycos.com) I LOVE the photo! I'm the last sax player on the right. It brings back great memories of the wonderful man Mr. Weed was. His passing on 9/11/05 will close the doors on a magical era.
I would very much like to speak with you about getting a copy of this photo! I'd like to share it with the other band members. Thanks so much!
