Full Moon

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Wiliam Wagenaar
Title: Full Moon
Gear used: OM-4Ti, Vivitar 3x TC, Albinar 2x TC, Zuiko 300/4.5
Diaphragm: F 5.6 on the lens, resulting in about F 32 in reality if I calculate correctly
Shutter speed: about 1/15
Film used: Fuji Sensia 100.
Technical information: I've tried to "shoot" the moon before, using either my OM-1 or my OM-2n on manual (using Sunny F16/F11) or on Auto with the OM-2n. I bracketed widely (+/- 2 stops) but always got too dark slides back. I bought a OM-4Ti last winter and tried it again using spot metering. This worked much better. I started using my 300mm, but soon found out the moon was only a little dot on my screen, so I added a 2x TC first, then a 3x TC and then boldly experimented using both TC's at the same time to create a 1800mm/F27?
I Used 3 exposures per lens combination, one without compensation, one with +1 compensation and one with -1 compensation. On all occasions the -1 turned out to be the best. I think this one is the best shot, but I cannot be sure about the sharpness. I am afraid it is a bit on the soft side. I have only looked at the slide on my viewer (my projector is elsewhere at the moment) and Hans van Veluwen scanned it for me. This one was taken with the 3x TC closest to the body. This made a sharper combination than with the 2x TC attached to the body. It was quite difficult to focus on an all matte screen (1-10).
Needless to say that a tripod and mirror-pre-fire was used. I used a heavy Linhoff studio-tripod attached to the lens collar. Using two tripods would be to combersome as the mood soes move quite quick when You use a 1800mm!
Digital edits: Cropped, converted to grey scale, resized, unsharpened.
Subject information: Quite obviously, it's the moon seen from one of our rooms on the second floor. At full moon early may. It was taken at about 11:00 PM local time, jus after the clouds had gone. It's not what one would expect from a night-time shot, but hey, the sun was long gone, so night is was!

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (olaf_greve@hotmail.com) Amazing how this overkill of TCs still yielded such a nice result! Also, it must have been *very* difficult to focus with a 1-series focusing screen and the usage of such a "slow lens combination".
Nice one!

Comment left by: Hans van Veluwen (hcvanveluwen@chello.nl) The sharpness would have been much better if you would have restricted yourself to just one TC, preferrable the 2X. So, I shall inform Jaap that you're interested in buying the 1000mm/F11 Zuiko... ;)

Comment left by: Ron Spolarich (caesar2@mediaone.net) Saw something similar to this in PopPhoto's April edition. A 600mm was teamed with 2-2x and 2-1.4x to produce a 4800mm shot of the setting sun against yacht racing. Very dramatic. A foreground object would have been a super shot but that's pretty tough when it's high in the sky. Still, it's a good shot.
