Pre Dawn over the Sunol Grade

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Mike Butler
Title: Pre Dawn over the Sunol Grade
Gear used: OM-2s + 50mm F1.4 + Tripod
Diaphragm: F11 +2/3 stop compensation
Shutter speed: Auto
Film used: Costco 200 ASA negative
Technical Information: I did extensive bracketing both with exposure and lenses, I thought this would lead to the "perfect" shot. Unfortunately it left me with too many shots to choose from. I was definitely overwhelmed but this is a double edged sword. Because of this I was able to choose the balance between the color of the sky versus the detail visible in the fore ground. I think the Pro's of you must either develop an "eye" for selection or be doomed to hours of difficult choices.

Scanned at 1200 dpi from the negative with no digital manipulation other than a resize and save as Jpeg.

Subject information: This shot is from a small side road at the top of the Sunol Grade (between Fremont and Pleasanton, California) looking east at about 5:00 AM. This is when I am normally sitting in the beginning of the days traffic on my way to work in Sunnyvale.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (olaf_greve@hotmail) I like the depth in this picture. The barb wire fence adds a lot to that.

Comment left by: Siddiq (siddim01@student.ucr.edu) not a bad view on your commute :)

Comment left by: S ((same)) oh, one more thing: that "golden river" right frame...headlamps of cars in rush hour? at 5 am? Yowza...

Comment left by: Wiliam Wagenaar (wiliam2@wish.net) Nice shot of the hills fading a liottle in the distance. Does it make getting up and commuting so early every day however? I don't envy you for that. (I am very lucky, because I cycle to my work in less than 10 minutes)

Comment left by: Barry Bean (bbbean@beancotton.com) lessee... what was the date when you shot this?.....

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) it could well be may 5 1900, as the photog overlooks a valley...and that is the stream reflecting the pre-dawn twilight :)

Comment left by: S (no e-mail specified) i meant may 22

Comment left by: Bryan Pilati (bpilati@yahoo.com) Sure siddiq, except they didn't make an OM-2 back then. :P Pretty shot Mike.
