Late Evening Stroll

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: John A. Lind
Title: Late Evening Stroll
Gear used: OM-4, 18/3.5 Zuiko MC with 49-72 step-up hood, tripod, cable release
Diaphragm: f/3.5
Shutter speed: 1/2
Film used: Kodak Royal Gold 100
Technical information: Shot absolutely dead level to keep the light standards and railing supports upright. Time of day is about a half-hour to forty minutes after sundown just at the end of the "afterglow" as the sky transitions to a deep blue just before going black. This maintains decent detail with much of the scene. Technical term for the timing is the End of Evening Nautical Twilight. Since this view is facing east, a faint hint of the afterglow can still be seen on the highrise buildings.
Subject information: The old Washington Street Bridge is located in downtown Indianapolis and you will notice it is slightly arched. This street was originally along the path of "The National Road" authorized by Congress in the early 1800's to connect the east coast of the U.S. with Saint Louis. The general path of The National Road eventually became U.S. Highway 40 which was obsoleted by the construction of Interstate Highway 70. This bridge is the original for U.S. 40 and Washington Street across the White River. Vehicle traffic is now diverted to a newer bridge south of this one which has been converted into a pedestrian mall as part of the White River State Park to connect the zoo and gardens with the rest of the park. The extreme wide angle perspective makes the downtown highrise corridor look more distant. This time of year people take late evening walks through the park and simply had to patiently wait a few minutes until a couple came by. Might have timed shutter release just a shade earlier judging from where the couple is in the main illumination from the street lamp.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (olaf_greve@hotmail.com) Nice perspective control, and the 18mm gives just the right amount of impact to this picture.

Comment left by: Wiliam Wagenaar (wiliam2@wish.net) Amazing depth, good use of the tiles in the foreground. I would have cropped on the top however.

Comment left by: Ian Nichols (i.a.nichols@bris.ac.uk) I like the balance between natural & artificial light - who says you shouldn't mix colour temperatures?

Comment left by: Barry Bean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Nice shot. I wouldn't have guessed this was the 18.

Comment left by: A Mackintosh (Alasdair.Mackintosh@eu.citrix.com) Perfect exposure on this one. It's all too easy for a single light-source to unbalance the lighting on a nighttime shot, but in this case everything is just right

Comment left by: Paul Wallich (wallich@echo.net) Purty. I'm surprised how much light there apparently still was from the balance of sky and street lights. It's a little hard to imagine what this would look like with a more conventional lens

Comment left by: Scott Nelson (scottcnelson@4dv.net) Nice one and great exposure. I agree with shooting the couple earlier, but I would have shot them WAY earlier. In fact, if they came back diagonally toward the left and front, they could have added foreground interest and depth, and would have stood out against the lighter walk, but ya gotta shoot what ya see.

Comment left by: Siddiq (siddim01@student.ucr.edu) Agree with Wil; makes a pretty good pano, not to say that the current pic is bad :)

Comment left by: Giles Stewart (cnocbui@indigo.ie) I like the feeling of depth and the composition lends a nice feeling of balance. I like the couple where they are as they seem to provide a depth cue and the apparent distance to them seems to preserve their privacy.

Comment left by: Norm (normc@writeme.com) Excellent exposure and contrast. If it was me, I'd have been tempted to tilt the camera down a touch, to give a little less sky and a little more of the pattern in the paving, but that's just a subjective opinion. The couple strolling is a nice addition.

Comment left by: Gregg Iverson (giverson@webkorner.com) Tack sharp! Couldn't resist. Nice composition and choice of lens. I like where the couple are, just leaving the circle of light suggests movement and sets a mood.

Comment left by: Joel Wilcox (jowilcox@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu) The composition as a whole is pleasing. Textures in the street are a happy addition and the clouds are a beautiful and painterly capture.
