Old Glory

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Boris Grigorov
Title: Old Glory
Gear Used: OM 1MD + Zuiko 50/1.8 + cable release + tripod
Diaphragm: f11
Shutter speed: B
Film Used: Fuji HQ 100
Technical Information: Used a tripod and cable release. Also to eliminate vibrations, locked the mirror up and used a cable release. I opened the diaphragm for 25 seconds at f11.
Subject information: This is an old steam boat. I think it is a restaurant now. The boat in front of it is a replica of the one Louis and Clark used. I composed the picture so it points to the main subject from the corner, since it was a big distraction. There was one more spot where I could have taken an even better picture using a wide angle lens, but when I looked in the viewfinder, I saw my shadow cast on the smaller boat. A couple of days later, Louis and Clark's was moved and I returned again, but there was a storm which took down half of the flags and the sky was not as beautiful.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (olaf_greve@hotmail.com) This picture could easily be printed on a postcard.
The flags and the star-shaped lights give an extra touch to it, and I don't think the boat in the foreground is too distracting.
Great shot!

Comment left by: Wiliam Wagenaar (wiliam2@wish.net) I don't mind the little boat in the foreground either, but like the shot as it is.

btw. Who are Louis and Clark. I only know of a Lois (Lane)and Clark (Kent), but cannot combine them with this boat.

Comment left by: Barry Bean (bbbean@beancotton.com) I like the small boat in the foreground. Adds a sense of authenticity.

BTW - Louis and Clark were boxing champs. I didn't realize Joe Louis beat Don Clark on a boat, but you learn something every day!

Comment left by: Boris Grigorov (grigorov@slu.edu) I like the clever jokes. Thanks for not being too harsh on my spelling and leaving the nice comments. Capturing the motion of the flags were the primary reason for the smaller aperture and longer exposure. I did not anticipate the effect the three bigger lights would have on the picture at the time and was happily surprised when saw the print.
Lewis and Clark are explorers of the West.
Boris
P.S. Forgot to mention before that there was a very light cropping(less than 1 cm) from left.

Comment left by: Scott Nelson (scottcnelson@4dv.net) Nothing like a pleasant surprse! I must say these night shots as a whole are very impressive.

Comment left by: Norm (no e-mail specified) I like the blurring of the flags. This isn't an easy type of picture to take, well done.

Comment left by: Stephen Scharf (scharfsj@ix.netcom.com) I like this shot very much. I like the little boat in the foreground, the range of light from the end of daylight in the sky to the night in the water and everything in between, and I like the steamboat.

Comment left by: Tom Wagner (twag30@hotmail.com) Beautiful shot, perfect shutter delay... The Golden Rod Showboat in St Charles Mo

Comment left by: Tom Wagner (twag@charter.net) Reason I know this is the Golden Rod Showboat..my home is within blocks..Lewis and Clark began their western exploration of what is known as the United States from this point.
