Box with highlights

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Paul Wallich
Title: Box with highlights
Gear used: OM-2SP with Tamron 80-200/2.8 at about 80
Diaphragm: f32
Shutter speed: Quite some time (Auto w/ +1 compensation)
Film used: Fuji Sensia II 100
Technical information: The exposure compensation balanced the reciprocity failure. And frame-filling neutral gray simplified OTF metering.
Subject information: This is one of the buildings of the "World Financial Center" in lower Manhattan. It is lit by the buildings around it plus general light pollution, and you can see a few reflections of the World Trade Center towers in the upper facade. During the day, this and other buildings in the complex tend to look like bad computer-graphics renderings of themselves.

Comment left by: Barry Bean (bbbean@beancotton.com) In a million years, I never would have picked this out as an impressive or beautiful building. However, your shot brings out the strength of the design and draws me in. That's what good photograpohy should do - make us appreciate the art and beauty that we ignore every day!

Comment left by: Ron Spolarich (caesar2@mediaone.net) The subject is clearly conveyed to the viewer. The massiveness of the building dominates the frame juxtaposed against its surroundings. Well done.

Comment left by: Chuck Norcutt (norcutt@attglobal.net) Yes, I like it and its squat massiveness. However, I don't understand f/32 and very long exposure as opposed to, say, f/8 and a shorter exposure. Why did you choose f/32 here?

Comment left by: Wiliam Wagenaar (wiliam2@wish.net) It really has a dramatic look behind the black parts in front of the view. Light pollution can be good sometimes! Well at least for taking photographs.

Comment left by: Paul Wallich (no e-mail specified) (to Chuck Norcutt) I chose f/32 for no good reason other than exercising the 2s's OTF auto capabilities. All the exposures in this attempt were well off the bottom of my metering capability. In retrospect I might have gone shorter, since DOF really wasn't an issue.
