Submitter's name: Olaf Greve
Title: Amsterdam Architecture
Gear used: Camedia C2020-Zoom
Diaphragm: Around f4-f5.6
Shutter speed: Auto.
Film used: Smart Media - digital media
Technical information: Not much, really. I set the lens to the biggest telephoto setting possible such that a condensed effect would occur.
Subject information: During the shooting season I was for about 10 minutes in Amsterdam on the square in front of the train station. I decided to take some pictures of typical Amsterdam architecture. In this picture I wanted to capture some of the typical Amsterdam sights, like the bicycles chained with 5 chains and padlocks to the rails that prevent people from falling in the canals, as well as some of the typical buildings. Out of the candidate shots, I thought this one was stronger than the ones in which the canal water is included. Furthermore, what I like a lot in this picture is the difference in the styles of the four buildings shown. Seemingly, as one looks from the right to the left, the style seems to get more modern. The red building is the typical seventeenth century style buildings that look so lovely on the Amsterdam canals. Two of my other favourite candidate shots were quite different, but they resembled two other entries too much for my likings, so Amsterdam it is! :)

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) I like the touch of the yellow flowers outside one of the high windows.

Comment left by: Wim Verheyen (no e-mail specified) Strange how the different building styles still seem to be in harmony, well seen. One small advice : turn the picture maybe 1/2 degree CCW.

Comment left by: Ken N (no e-mail specified) I'm not so sure about the 1/2 degree CCW. None of those old buildings are exactly square with the world.

Comment left by: Jeff Keller (no e-mail specified) Very nice sequence of buildings. I would bet the impact would be even greater without the cars, just the bicycles.

Comment left by: Duncan Paterson (no e-mail specified) Very well spotted.

Comment left by: Piers Hemy (no e-mail specified) This capture the Amsterdam cityscape beautifully. Since it is a digital image, I would have been tempted to increase the staruration a little.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Tnx for the nice comments! :)

Piers: even though it would indeed be very easy to enhance the saturation (yielding a stronger result), I find myself shooting the digital camera a lot like the OM: zero digital manipulation. I prefer to obtain saturation effects by underexposing slightly, but during the day-time I normally do not use under or over exposure. Good suggestion though!

Comment left by: Dean (dtyler@hbiamerica.com) I too like the history of the buildings. Nice shot.
