Boston From Rag Rock

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Chuck Norcutt
Title: Boston From Rag Rock
Gear used: OM-2s + 135/3.5 + tripod + self-timer.
Diaphragm: f8
Shutter speed: probably 1/250
Film used: Ektachrome 100.
Technical information: I experimented with everything from 17 to 250mm. The 135 seemed to make the best composition. The time was very late afternoon and the wind was trying very hard to tear my hat off as it frequently does in the Boston area. I used the self-timer for mirror and aperture pre-fire and pressed down on the camera and tripod with both hands to steady it in the wind. I had also shot half the roll a week earlier but came back later after the trees had changed some more. A few buildings may seem to be falling over and it is because their sun washed right sides may be invisible against the sky.
Subject information: This is the Boston skyline from a distance of about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northwest of the city. The shot is taken from a vantage point called "Rag Rock" which is a large, solid rock hillside in Woburn, Massachusetts. You can read about it here. Trying to make this scanned image look like the slide has been a real challenge. I probably should have used a polarizer or haze filter but they were in the wrong bag.

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) The autumn colours add a really noce toch to the landscape.

Comment left by: Jeff Keller (no e-mail specified) The saturated colors of the landscape vs. the hazy view of the city adds to the picture. The city looks like an advancing army. Very nice!

Comment left by: Ken N (no e-mail specified) A bit of "Local Contrast Enhancement" using wide and gentle settings of UnSharpMask will probably restore the look you were after. Nice shot.

Comment left by: :Doro (no e-mail specified) I like the contrast between the grey skyline and the autumn colours. Maybe a second layer and blending would do the trick? :D

Comment left by: Piers Hemy (no e-mail specified) I can see how this would have been a very challenging image, to get the skyline and the tress in balance. Well done.

Comment left by: Dean (dtyler@hbiamerica.com) Nice shot. I will have to got there. I work in Woburn and had no idea. Maybe we need a Boston Zuiko meeting. Great composition.
