House in Kalamata

Comments made by the photographer

Submtter's name: Andy Radcliffe
Title: House in Kalamata
Gear used: Olympus E-1 and 14-54 lens at 33mm.
Diaphragm: F8.0
Shutter speed: 1/200th
Film used: Digital - ISO 100
Technical information: Conversion from RAW to jpeg,a little correction to converging verticals, re-sized to 800x600 and a touch of USM.
Subject information: This old house is in the town of Kalamata , the capital of the district of Messinia, Greece. It stands at the junction of Kritis and Faron streets and is surrounded (as you can see) by typical anonymous concrete apartment blocks. However, I just loved its colours, the huge wooden door , its sheer elegance and the fact that it has managed to survive for so long , even through earthquakes.

Comment left by: Brian Swale (no e-mail specified) Nice image. I wondered if you had used a PC (Perspective Control, not Politically Correct) lens, then I read what you wrote.

Lovely old house and you include enough of the surroundings to make the point of the present-day alternative builing design and methods.

Very sharp, and nice colours.

Comment left by: Chris Barker (ftog@threeshoes.co.uk) Lovley house, although I might have been tempted to go in a little closer. But then again, perhaps you wanted the contrast between beautiful and ugly.

Comment left by: Anonymous! (no e-mail specified) Yes, I did want to try and show how out of place it looked, now that all around it is concrete, although I did take a couple of closer shots (of the door) as well.Although it has a small and cute look, as you can see it is a seriously big (and very tall) house. The entrance on to the balcony with the Greek flag is wonderful, I think. I wish I could have explored inside too...

Comment left by: Piers Hemy (no e-mail specified) I agree with you, and disagree with Chris, that setting the context is important. I would have gone in close on door and window - but that would not have been a cityscape!
