Chihuly in the Garden

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Gary Teller
Title: Chihuly in the Garden
Gear used: OM2 + Zuiko 135/2.8 hand held
Diaphragm: Not recorded, probably f5.6
Shutter speed: Not recorded
Film used: Kodak Gold 100
Technical information: Ummmm, I squatted and waited for some children to my right to move away. Original image was cropped a fair amount on the top so as to keep the mass of dark green foliage from overwhelming the girl. I also cropped slightly on the right edge. Minor brightness and contrast adjustments were made in Photoshop Elements. Minor contrast and sharpening adjustments were done to the girl to give her the appearance of being a bit more in focus.
Subject information: The photo was taken on a very overcast day at the Atlanta, Georgia Botanical Garden. The Garden has been hosting an exhibit, entitled Chihuly in the Garden, of glassblower Dale Chihuly's works. In 20 years of living in Atlanta this was my first visit to the Garden. I guess I like plants OK; however, fantastic blown glass will draw me out in a heartbeat. I wasn't planning on the child being in the background which is why she was a bit out of focus in the original print. After all, I was there for the glass, not cute kids. I thought about eliminating her in Photoshop but the more I looked at the photo the more I liked her in it.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Good usage of the many colours.

Comment left by: Chris Barker (ftog@threeshoes.co.uk) Interesting and inventive interpretation of the theme, I should say, and the colours go well with the human interest. It's a pity about the little signs in the fore- and background.

Comment left by: Andrew Wendelborn (no e-mail specified) I like the colours, and the 135 perspective works well.

Comment left by: Piers Hemy (no e-mail specified) Having the one child in the background "makes" the picture, and is appropriate to that riot of colour.
